Chapter 27

I woke up because I felt like I was in a sauna. I quickly realized Jameson was to blame. He was practically sleeping on top of me. Lycanthropes were hot blooded ... literally. Their core temperature was higher than the average human. It was one of the reasons they could walk around barely dressed during the winter months.

He was the first man I slept in a bed with, and I was starting to think I might not be a fan. I liked my space, and he was currently invading it. I glanced at the clock ... it was close enough to time to get up. I managed to wiggle out from under him. I gathered some clothes, then went into the bathroom to shower and dress.

Once I was done, I stepped out of the bathroom. Jameson was still sleeping soundly. Since he complained of not being able to sleep, I decided to leave him. He could show himself out as easily as he invited himself in.

I hurried toward the stairs, pausing when I heard voices. I started down them, and Henry came into view first. I recognized the voice of the man he was talking to before I saw him ... Gideon.

Henry’s eyes landed on me. “Hey, Dorian.” He seemed tense ... maybe the conversation wasn’t a friendly one.

I smiled. “Hey, Henry ... hey, Gideon ... whatcha doing?”

Henry’s eyes darted to Gideon. “We were just discussing some things.” Yep ... definitely not a friendly conversation.

Gideon’s eyes drifted to me. “Henry was just explaining the case against Martin. I’m confused as to why I wasn’t informed about the investigation involving one of my people.” The testy hint to his tone made me think I may have stepped in something I didn’t want any part of.

Henry sighed impatiently. “We were trying to keep the case low profile ... it was nothing against you.”

Gideon laughed harshly. “Of course not ... I simply couldn’t be trusted with the information.”

Henry made an annoyed noise and threw his hands in the air. “Do you have to make everything personal? It was a police matter, plain and simple.”

Gideon didn’t appear to be any happier with Henry’s excuse, but he didn’t argue.

“Alrighty then ... I’m going to head out. Call me if you need me, Henry,” I said as I made a beeline for the door.

Henry cleared his throat. “Dorian?”

I turned toward him, smiling sweetly. “Yes?”

His eyebrow shot up in slight amusement. “Are you just going to leave your boyfriend upstairs?”

I hesitated, not realizing he knew Jameson was in my bed. He didn’t seem bothered by that fact, so I was going to play it off. “Um ... he’s not my boyfriend, and I’m pretty sure he can find his way out.” I turned and opened the door, continuing on my way before he could ask any more questions I didn’t really want to answer.

I climbed in my car, then reached over and grabbed the file on the passenger seat. I flipped it open and scanned the page.
